National Treasures Revealed on Maps

A map of united states is a fairly common item. Most people encounter one on their classroom walls or in the pages of text book. Many news programs and newspapers will use maps to tell a story and lots of people use maps to plot cross country trips or vacations. But how many people actually study the map — other than memorizing the fifty states or looking at a specific area for navigational purposes?

A good map of the country is going to reveal the natural treasures of the nation. Some will be very obvious, such as the location of the Grand Canyon and the Continental Divide . Others will take a bit more visual hunting. The major mountain ranges, mighty rivers, and expanses of prairies and deserts are depicted on a map. From great lakes to major cities that have historical or political importance, all are depicted on a map of the US.

To get a sense of other treasures hiding throughout the country, people can turn to travel maps . These are likely to include national parks and forests as well as smaller rivers, lakes, and mountains. They may also list things like historic battlefields or other significant sites, national monuments, and local points of interest, such as state capitols and nature preserves.

Las Vegas: How to Run Away Together

It’s not as difficult as it sounds, although it’s not necessarily easy, either. These days, the idea of eloping does have a certain kind of charm, mostly because the word itself is one that’s not in the common vernacular. Time was, and not too long ago, either, that couples would talk about making the big decision themselves, and head off to Las Vegas to elope. Not anymore. Or maybe, not so much. Or maybe even, well, not as much but why not?

Why not tie the knot is a big question for anyone who’s serious about anyone these days. It comes up as either a nice possibility, the only logical choice, or an ironic quotation of a past that never was, depending on one’s point of view. Ideas about marriage vary from culture to culture, and change over time, so in a place as complex as this one, the ideas are likely to be all over the map.

For some people, Las Vegas is always a possibility. For those who are romantic at heart, it’s a way to run away together and make it official without making it complicated by the unreasonable wishes of family and friends. And for those who are a little more than hesitant to enter into the institution, it’s a way to make it legal without making it constrictive. And for those in between or outside of these categories, there are more things on heaven and earth in any philosophy, and of course, not all of these things reside in Vegas, no matter what the locals might say.

Vegas & the Grand Canyon

The American West is about grandness — big open spaces, star-filled skies and cowboys riding for days without seeing another person. This grandness has been taken to extreme in Las Vegas, where every hotel, casino. and show attempts to be bigger, better, and more glamorous than those that came before.

Vegas is known for its gambling, its showgirls and its wild parties. The Sin of Sin City is to be forgotten once visitors return home, with only memories — and maybe a few cell phone pictures — to prove it ever happened. But there is another side of Vegas, one that is tied intrinsically to the history and wonder of the region. A Vegas that includes Hoover Dam, and the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is about as big as anything in the West gets. Located a short helicopter ride from the Vegas strip, it has become a popular destination for those visiting Las Vegas with their family or as a part of a romantic getaway. There are several companies, like Papillon tours that offer package trips including views of the Canyon, Hoover Dam, and the Vegas Strip. It seems like the perfect way to experience the wide open and grand scale of the West in all its forms.

Unless you’re extremely wealthy or invulnerable to injury and illness it’s probably a good idea to get visitor medical insurance before you travel overseas. This applies equally to Americans traveling abroad and to foreigners coming to visit, work, or study in the USA.

It’s easy to overlook the need for insurance, especially on shorter trips. There is, however, a real risk associated with foreign travel and, depending on the country or countries being visited, medical care could be more expensive than you think or may not be available at all which would require you to be evacuated back home or to a nearby country where you could get treatment.

While it is true that many people travel without ever getting sick or hurt, the same can be said about daily life. Do you have domestic health insurance protecting you in case something happens? While you can’t take that policy with you overseas, you can buy similar coverage so that your mind can be at ease instead of worrying that every time you go skiing, scuba diving, cycling or rock climbing will end up with you in a hospital. A good policy will cover emergency treatment, help you replace lost prescriptions for medicine, eyeglasses, and the like, and even have provisions for evacuation. For longer visits you can purchase insurance that covers preventive checkups and services as well as treatment for existing conditions.

The proper question to ask isn’t whether you need visitor medical insurance, but how much and what kind.

Hong Kong to Bid on 2023 Asian Games

Even though it failed in a previous attempt to host the Asian Games, it is widely believed that Hong Kong will submit a bid to host the event in 2023.

Hong Kong bid on the 2006 Games, but lost out to Doha. However, they recently successfully hosted equestrian events as part of the 2008 Summer Olympics and were the sole host of the 2009 East Asian Games , even besting Japan to win a gold medal in soccer. The momentum created by the event has encouraged the government to believe they can succeed in this new bid.

While the bid has many supporters who would love to see the local economy benefit, there are others who believe the bid would end up costing the government. While construction, restaurants, shops and the Hong Kong Hotel industries would likely profit from the influx of athletes, officials, and spectators, current estimates project the event will cost the government HK$13.8 billion, or $1.78 billion US. This contrasts the cost of the East Asian Games, which was a mere $300 million.

Officials insist that building eight new sports venues is an investment in the future of the region. Likewise, the event is projected to generate not only tourist income, but to create jobs. Most importantly it would stimulate the public’s imagination for sports and bring residents together. The main concern is that Hong Kong is very crowded , with a dense population and some of the world’s most expensive real estate. Building facilities that could house delegations from over 45 countries will take space, which Hong Kong may not have.

Formal bids are due by the end of 2010. The host country is scheduled to be announced in the spring of 2011.

This fall the Montreal Botantical Garden is presenting The Magic of Lanterns in the Chinese Garden. This 18th edition of the display continues through October 31st and commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Montreal-Shanghai friendship as well as salutes this year’s World Expo in Shanghai.

Inspired by the famous traditional Chinese painting Qing Ming Shang He Tu, this year’s theme is Like a Painting. In addition special lanterns that represent the 2010 theme, there are over 700 traditional traditional lanterns on display every year. The Lantern Festival in China dates back to the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) and is held during the New Year cycle. Lanterns carry traditional motifs of animals, plants, and mythical scenes. Originally made of silk and paper, modern materials such as nylon are more common today. The lighting for The Magic of Lanterns was changed to a TFT LED Contactless System in 2008. This brings energy use for the event to 1/10th what it used to be as well as ensuring that the lights are more reliable, even in less than ideal weather.

In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Insectarium, giant lanterns have been created in shapes of butterflies, grasshoppers and dragonflies and line the paths around the museum that are devoted to insects. Besides strolling through the lantern-lit paths, visitors can enjoy Chinese pastries and jasmine-scented green tea. Visitors staying at hotels in Montreal can check with the hotel concierge for details and directions to the Gardens.

Most art exhibitions last for a few weeks or a few months, but the Vancouver Biennale , which started on January 1st of 2009, is scheduled to run through June of 2011. This open air exhibition features some of the most prominent sculptors in the world as well as renowned New Media Artists — and all available to the public for free. There’s still plenty of time for visitors to book a flight and schedule one of the best Vancouver hotels to enjoy this one-of-a-kind event.

Bike and pedestrian paths wind through public sculptures placed on beaches, throughout the city’s urban plazas and waterside neighborhoods. The Vancouver International Airport is a major site for the exhibition. New Media installations are visible across Vancouver’s many transit shelters, billboards, and the rapid transit vehicles themselves. Artists from over 25 countries and 6 continents will provide 30 major sculpture installations while 100 international artists will display some 60-80 light and New Media installation. Simulcast events as well as extensive international media coverage offer glimpses of the event to art lovers across the globe.

With a theme of in-TRANSIT-ion, the Biennale emphasizes how people move through a mobile society and the changing sensibilities and attitudes towards public art . Special workshops are scheduled throughout the two year event and online learning opportunities include school lesson plans and interactive games.

Music in Mexico

Many people associated Mexico with the popular coastal cities and beaches. These are also some of the country’s most frequented tourist destinations. However, one of the great things about the country that many people come to appreciate at a greater lever while they are visiting is the music. Music, food, performance and art are all essential aspect of the Mexican culture and it is nearly impossible to visit the country without experiencing all of them.

To what extent, and regarding the various genres involved with art and performance is dependent on where you might be visiting and also to a large degree on personal interest. However, you are certain to encounter all of the above while you are there and are also more than likely to develop a greater appreciation for all them. And of course if you’re enjoying the beautiful accommodations at one of the four star Mexico hotels in Acapulco or another popular beach area you will have great access to multiple offerings.

Mexican music is extremely diverse and includes a wide variety of styles, instruments and sounds though it is frequently associated with two primary genres, flamenco guitar and mariachi bands . In addition musical genres like classical and jazz are also popular in Mexico, and while tourists are sometimes surprised to find a live jazz trio , they usually enjoy the sound.

Taoism and Photography in Beijing

The principles of Taoism are impossible to lay forth in any short form, although there are many attempts to try. The notion of harmony in nature is one that is almost graspable, but it tends to disappear when it’s pursued, which is in the order of the nature of all things. It may be better understood in terms of the art with Taoist connections, although this too can tend to become ethereal in moments.

There’s no other way to experience anything than to go through it, and to see Beijing one does have to be in a Beijing hotel to begin. It’s not simply a question of presence, of course, but a question of intensity, and this comes with time. At the core of any art form, there is patience or the absence of patience, and in the contemporary photography scene in Beijing , the dualism is taken to new levels of complexity.

It’s all part of a search for the moment when complexity stops altogether, and there is suddenly a sense of connection between all things, with no real idea of how the map lead to that particular moment. This kind of deeper experience is sometimes demanding more time from the seeker, and a stay in a residence hotel can make the traveler less temporary. At the same time, it’s never long before the moment opens up to reveal that this is all very temporary, and the best way to catch a moment that will never repeat is through photographing it.
