It’s not as difficult as it sounds, although it’s not necessarily easy, either. These days, the idea of eloping does have a certain kind of charm, mostly because the word itself is one that’s not in the common vernacular. Time was, and not too long ago, either, that couples would talk about making the big decision themselves, and head off to Las Vegas to elope. Not anymore. Or maybe, not so much. Or maybe even, well, not as much but why not?
Why not tie the knot is a big question for anyone who’s serious about anyone these days. It comes up as either a nice possibility, the only logical choice, or an ironic quotation of a past that never was, depending on one’s point of view. Ideas about marriage vary from culture to culture, and change over time, so in a place as complex as this one, the ideas are likely to be all over the map.
For some people, Las Vegas is always a possibility. For those who are romantic at heart, it’s a way to run away together and make it official without making it complicated by the unreasonable wishes of family and friends. And for those who are a little more than hesitant to enter into the institution, it’s a way to make it legal without making it constrictive. And for those in between or outside of these categories, there are more things on heaven and earth in any philosophy, and of course, not all of these things reside in Vegas, no matter what the locals might say.
