Solar Power Lights Up Spirits of Invention
Posted in: Enviroment by George on February 20, 2011
There’s something about solar power that seems to bring out the best in people. In part, it’s probably related to the central idea that renewable energy sources make for a more creative way of living in general. It’s also at the cutting edges of energy technologies, and some of the world’s best minds have spent time and space in the realm of solar energy.
Those who have spent time considering the benefits of converting their homes to solar energy usually don’t waste much time once the decision is made. This is also part of that resourceful spirit that accompanies a green lifestyle. It’s especially visible in the more forward-looking places like California. Solar installers have an advantage over other places here, because it’s not difficult to convince the population of its obvious benefits.
There are other innovations that extend beyond large-scale conversions. Although people have been playing with solar-powered gadgets for a few decades, there are recent inventions that are very exciting. Products like the solar purse have a whimsical appeal but with real practical value. All of these technologies have in common the ability to see further up the road, shining light in the dark.
What is Included in a Mortgage Payment?
Posted in: Money by George on February 16, 2011
Investing in a home is long-term commitment on both the part of the home owner and the bank that is providing the mortgage. This is why mortgages are so much more complicated than auto or personal loans. The average mortgage is for thirty years and both parties need to feel secure that the terms of the loan will be met throughout those three decades.
Like an auto loan, there is much more to be considered when figuring out mortgage payments than simply the principle of the loan. Interest rates for mortgages can be very complex, depending on the type of loan. A fixed rate mortgage is the easiest as the interest rate remains the same for the entire life of the mortgage. Adjustable rate mortgages (or ARMs), graduated payment mortgages, balloon payment mortgages , and negative amortization mortgages are much more difficult to calculate as the interest rate will change over time. This means that the monthly payment will likely change over the years, in come cases it will change from month to month.
Using a Mortgage Payment Calculator on even a fixed rate mortgage can be complicated. This is because interest is not the only thing that affects the payment. Fees that are usually handled during escrow can also increase the amount of a mortgage payment. These include things like property taxes, flood insurance, and property insurance.
It is important when calculating potential mortgage payments to take into account changes in interest over time as well as the additional mortgage costs in order to get an accurate projection of the amount due not just during the initial “teaser” period, but for the entire mortgage term. That is the only way to determine if a borrower can afford a specific house and its accompanying mortgage.
Vegas & the Grand Canyon
Posted in: Travel by George on February 4, 2011
The American West is about grandness — big open spaces, star-filled skies and cowboys riding for days without seeing another person. This grandness has been taken to extreme in Las Vegas, where every hotel, casino. and show attempts to be bigger, better, and more glamorous than those that came before.
Vegas is known for its gambling, its showgirls and its wild parties. The Sin of Sin City is to be forgotten once visitors return home, with only memories — and maybe a few cell phone pictures — to prove it ever happened. But there is another side of Vegas, one that is tied intrinsically to the history and wonder of the region. A Vegas that includes Hoover Dam, and the Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon is about as big as anything in the West gets. Located a short helicopter ride from the Vegas strip, it has become a popular destination for those visiting Las Vegas with their family or as a part of a romantic getaway. There are several companies, like Papillon tours that offer package trips including views of the Canyon, Hoover Dam, and the Vegas Strip. It seems like the perfect way to experience the wide open and grand scale of the West in all its forms.
