Drug Rehab Centers are a Crucial Part of Recovery

Posted in: Health by George on October 30, 2010

The first principle of any 12 step program is admitting you have a problem. However, for those who have a serious drug addiction, it can be equally important to choose the right drug rehab facility. Both are key factors in whether the patient can achieve a sustainable recovery.

The number of drug rehabilitation centers seems to grow constantly to meet the ever rising demand. Because there are different approaches to rehab, different facilities will offer different services and addicts and their loved ones need to make sure that the program they choose is suitable both to their particular addiction and to their personal needs. There are programs that focus on religious faith while others address the specific needs of adolescent or senior drug users . Programs may offer detox or only therapy and may be inpatient, outpatient, or a combination of all the above.

Many addicts who successfully recover cite the role of drug rehab programs as vital to their beating the addiction. Successful centers provide a sense of safety and have a team of qualified professionals that work with addicts at every stage of recovery. The best programs offer addicts not only assistance in breaking addiction but teach them tools to avoid temptation and ways to handle the situations and stresses that led to the original addiction so that they don’t relapse later.

Cars are complex machines. They often require the expertise of a skilled professional mechanic to determine what is wrong and the best way to fix it. And by the end you could wind up paying hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. In an effort to save yourself some money during this financially tight time, you could consider doing your own car repair .
The first thing that you need to get you started working on your car is a repair manual. Repair manuals are specific to the make, model and year of the car. So, for example if you have a ’96 Dodge Caravan , you would need a ’96 Dodge Caravan repair manual . Or if you have a GMC, a GMC manual . It’s not a bad idea to study the manual so that you have a better idea how the car operates and what specific methods need to be used on it.
Even though it takes time and experience to learn how to work on your car, it is possible. Once you have a better understanding of your vehicle, how it works, and the different parts, you will be repairing your car in no time and saving yourself a small fortune in the meantime.

Hong Kong to Bid on 2023 Asian Games

Posted in: Travel by George on October 3, 2010

Even though it failed in a previous attempt to host the Asian Games, it is widely believed that Hong Kong will submit a bid to host the event in 2023.

Hong Kong bid on the 2006 Games, but lost out to Doha. However, they recently successfully hosted equestrian events as part of the 2008 Summer Olympics and were the sole host of the 2009 East Asian Games , even besting Japan to win a gold medal in soccer. The momentum created by the event has encouraged the government to believe they can succeed in this new bid.

While the bid has many supporters who would love to see the local economy benefit, there are others who believe the bid would end up costing the government. While construction, restaurants, shops and the Hong Kong Hotel industries would likely profit from the influx of athletes, officials, and spectators, current estimates project the event will cost the government HK$13.8 billion, or $1.78 billion US. This contrasts the cost of the East Asian Games, which was a mere $300 million.

Officials insist that building eight new sports venues is an investment in the future of the region. Likewise, the event is projected to generate not only tourist income, but to create jobs. Most importantly it would stimulate the public’s imagination for sports and bring residents together. The main concern is that Hong Kong is very crowded , with a dense population and some of the world’s most expensive real estate. Building facilities that could house delegations from over 45 countries will take space, which Hong Kong may not have.

Formal bids are due by the end of 2010. The host country is scheduled to be announced in the spring of 2011.

The Importance of Religious Maps

Posted in: History by George on October 1, 2010

For modern citizens it can be difficult to understand the impact of religion on something like the development of maps. What could medieval religious observation have to do with the canada map you bought to use for planning your vacation?

The first maps, other than crude directions of trade routes or military boarders, were created for religious purposes. In the 12th century, the T-O world map was quite common. It depicted Jerusalem as the center of the world with east at the top of the map. These maps were carefully illuminated by hand , usually by religious orders, and designated the spread of various religions, which was pretty much synonymous with political power at the time.

With the rise of world exploration during the early Renaissance, cartography in the west began to focus more on navigation. Printing presses made dissemination of maps easier and by the 16th century the first globes were produced, reflecting a truer shape of the world and incorporating the New World for the first time. Politics and religion were still tightly tied during the exploration of the New World, so, although more geographically accurate, many of these maps were still used to calculate the spread of Christianity or plan where to send missionaries.
