Stress and Biofeedback

The relationship between the mind and the body is enormously complex. The link between mind and body is one that suggests an entirely mutual dependency, and when it comes to stress, that could count as very good news. Stress is something that happens in the body and to the body, but its origins are most certainly in the mind. Contemporary medicine has been able to help people to manage stress with biofeedback and this does illustrate that the mind is in fact in a position to control it.

It begins, like most everything, with a thought. The thought can be of a dangerous, uncomfortable, or even exciting situation. Here, perception does determine reality as far as the body is concerned. The thought will decide whether or not the body responds to the stimuli, recognizing it as an immanent danger, or merely another experience to go through.

This is one of the most important, and enticing, aspects of biofeedback . It seems as though the moment of thought is the moment when the body starts to react. Controlling thought is not necessarily possible, or even desirable, however, with the techniques that biofeedback and other programs, one can learn how to recognize when the thoughts have taken over, and begin to control them. Taking care to avoid over-reacting is one part of the process, but it’s also possible to modulate the reaction even after it’s begun responding.
