Is Being a Manager Right for You?
Posted in: Business by George on June 29, 2010
As you work at your company longer, you find that there will be more and more opportunities to become a manager. While this may at first seem like a great idea, you have better pay and a more respected job, there are a number of things about being a manager that may not sit well with you. It is not a job for everyone.
It is lonelier as a boss. As an underling you can spend more time with your peers. There is something common to complain about which gives you an opening into any conversation. Unless your company has a good program whereby you meet more of the other managers, which few do, there aren’t a lot of people for you to spend your time with. Usually, management courses aren’t long enough to really make friends with other managers. In order to give the impression of fairness you will need to be at least a little bit removed from the other employees. That doesn’t mean that you can’t keep the friends you had before, but you can’t show them that they are your friends in the workplace.
You will also want to think about the fact that all decisions must rest on your shoulders. Employees should for the most part be able to make decisions on their own, but when it comes to your bosses, or if you are high enough, the public, those decisions are still your responsibility and therefore if they are bad ones can be blamed on you. If they are good ones you can be rewarded for something you didn’t do. You can get through this by trying to find out everything everyone is going to do, or set up some kind of system so that you know about the big things before your bosses do.
It’s not all bad. There are lots of good parts, and that should not be forgotten. There is absolutely a feeling of accomplishment when things are getting done in your team. Public speaking isn’t gone, but for most managers, sales calls are. There are also, of course, the status, the power and the pay. It is also a different type of work, with different challenges and a much deeper combination of hard and soft skills. For some people this can be a whole lot more rewarding, and that is what should really be taken into account when choosing if you want to become a manager. If that works best for you, the rest of it can be solved as well.
Baby Proofing Your Home
Posted in: Home by George on June 26, 2010
Welcoming a new baby into the home is an exciting time. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, relative or friend, there is nothing like cuddling that cute little bundle of joy. Regardless of the relation, our natural instinct is to protect the child and keep them safe. One of the first places to do this is your home. Not everyone needs to baby proof , but if the baby will be spending a substantial amount of time in your home there are a few steps that you can take to make your home not only fun but more importantly safe.
Many of the supplies you will need can be found at your local grocery store; however if really want a selection check out the nearest Babies R Us . They will also be able to offer suggestions and answer any questions that you might have.
A good place to start is the room, or rooms, that the baby will be in. For instance the living room and, once they become mobile, probably the kitchen and bathroom as well. Start by getting outlet covers and installing them on all the lower outlets. For some reason children are drawn to the outlets and curiosity often leads them to seeing what will fit inside. Fortunately outlet covers are very inexpensive and can be easily taken on or off when you need to use the outlet.
One area that often gets overlooked is the windows. No, in most cases you don’t have to worry about baby climbing out the window, but you should look at the type of window treatments that you have installed. Any blinds that have a long cord could be a possible chocking hazard. These can easily be replaced with cordless shades from Next Day Blinds . Also, you will want to check and make sure that none of your blinds contain lead, especially in areas were the baby will be sleeping or eating. It is important that those are replaced with vinyl or aluminum next day blinds as soon as possible, not only for the baby’s safety but for yours as well.
Another area of concern that should be addressed early on is keeping kitchen and bathroom chemicals out of reach. There are a couple of ways to deal with this. First you can move them from under the sink and keep them someplace safer and out of reach, or you can install locks on your cabinet doors. Cabinet locks come in a variety of different styles depending on the type of cabinets that you have and how visible you want them to be — some install on the inside so they are not seen and others go on the outside.
With a safe environment created, you and baby will have years to spend together playing and having fun worry free.
Unpaid Internships May Be Illegal
Posted in: Internships by George on June 20, 2010
The economical times always make people do crazy things. Businesses are no different. Some people might feel like things are getting a whole lot better, but it is obvious by the mushrooming of unpaid internships that the business world is absolutely still going crazy. It turns out that there are a number of criteria that have to be met in order for something like this to be unpaid. Many of these internships do not fit any of the criteria, but they are still getting filled because students need the experience on their resumes . What many students forget is that there are a number or great internships during the summer like the Southwestern Company which will pay you for all your hard work.
Here are the criteria so that you can determine if you have been cheated out of money at an internship.
1. The internship gives training that would be equivalent to that done at a vocational school.
2. The internship must benefit the intern.
3. The intern does not replace regular employees and works under close observation.
4. There is no immediate advantage to having the intern and there may even be some inconvenience on the part of the employer due to having the intern.
5. There is an understanding that the intern might not be hired at the end of the interning period. (Although there are a number of paid and unpaid interns who will get hired at the end of their internship. Southwestern Company does it all the time.)
6. There is an understanding that there will be no compensation for the training period.
If even one of these is not true the intern is required to be paid if they are working for a for-profit company. When interning at a not for profit company it is a little harder to ask for money because it can go from claiming that you were an intern to claiming that you were a volunteer.
Outstanding College Tennis Players
Posted in: Sports by George on June 18, 2010
While there is a great fascination with professional tennis, some of the most interesting and dynamic matches come at the college level. This is the point where players are really beginning to demonstrate their personal strengths, which are near professional and sometimes at it levels, and their personalities as players are really coming through. Competition is fierce and rivalries exist among players as well as between various schools and training programs. And the team set ups at this level are exciting to watch and most people pick teams and players from their school or alma matter as favorites. Players like Maria Mosolova, from Northwestern , Bassam Beides from Pepperdine and Ali Beavers from Georgia Southern University Women’s Tennis continue to gain national attention and interest.
Mosolova was named as an ITA All-American in the singles category and she finished the season ranked as number two in the nation. She was one of the four finalists selected for the 2009 Women’s Tennis Honda Sports Award. She is one of the young players who is highly expected to have a quality career and possibly go on to win Wimbledon tennis and other Grand Slam titles.
Bassam Beides is a senior and holds an impressive college record. He has risen from something of an underdog status to his current defeats and upsets. His record in singles is 17 and 10, and for doubles it is 15 and 11. As a junior he won the ITA All American honors in doubles. He won the same title for singles as a sophomore. Ali Beavers is another college favorite and is already demonstrating outstanding strengths that will take her far on the professional circuit. She is currently a junior and is placed second on the team singles record. These players may not be in the Wimbledon 2010 lineup, but you can look for them in the future.
