The Many Benefits of Effective Communication
Posted in: Business by George on December 30, 2009
Many people have an extremely hard time when faced with the public speaking. Most people are never really taught how to effectively communicate their thoughts, their feelings and their ideas, so it stands to reason that to speak in front of or to other people…many are not only uncomfortable, but they fail at saying what they really mean to say. In personal life and in the world of business, nothing is more frustrating than being misunderstood. Corporate training courses today are more and more accessible as managers and company executives not only find that their employees have this challenge, but that in some cases, they do too.
In discussions or interactions, many may become consumed with the desire to be right, rather than the desire to hear, and be heard. It is a collective thought process that drives a company forward, the ideas and the suggestions of all, create one solid whole. Effectively communicating involves effectively listening. Too often the speaker is evaluated rather than the message, and this results in a breakdown of not only communication but of true understanding. This affects everything from customer service to inter-office relations, to the sales process. Improvement strategies involve asking oneself a few questions about the way one communicates themselves.
Once you own your communication skills, you take full responsibility, for what you are conveying and for what the person you are conveying the message to, is hearing. This involves a focus on non-judgement, non-prejudice and with no expectations. When you wonder if the other person is listening, take note on whether you are listening, offering messages of value and giving them the opportunity to offer back. Within a company, everyone has something valuable to contribute. If a scruffy-haired man working in a patent office can come up with the Theory of Relativity, just imagine what those working for you may come up with when they are given the chance to contribute.
Taylor Swift Ranks Higher After Apology
Posted in: People by George on December 21, 2009
These are the moments when the world seems out of balance just enough that things might get interesting again. If it were not for Marlon Brando sending Sasheen Littlefeather to accept his Oscar in 1973, we wouldn’t have the precedent. But interrupted award speeches making news faster than brilliant award speeches, and that’s just further proof that the public is easily amused, or that there is something in the water here that makes us naturally like rebellion in most any form.
With rises to fame as sudden and as sure as Taylor Swift, rank systems are necessary to keep track of just how famous can someone be in a life. There are no good methods for quantifying fame or success, because the money never indicates more than luck or some well-considered initial investments. It could be that the best indicator would be a scale of complete unknown to Muhammad Ali. He can walk into any city or town on the planet and be instantly recognized by enough people that he can draw a crowd everywhere. Taylor Swift may not have the same capacity, and maybe never will, but at this particular moment there are few places she can go without being a superstar.
It’s an interesting and precarious position, but at the moment, things seem to be moving in her direction very nicely. It would also seem that this level of fame can bring some interesting twists, if she and her posse decide to take the challenge seriously. As it was evident on the awards show, she didn’t have to do anything but be interrupted and her numbers increased. With a little bit of attention, she and Kanye can move some spectacular mountains in their corner of reality, a corner which is increasingly interesting to the world at large.
Hot Tubs and Spas Can Help Reduce Stress Levels
Posted in: Health by George on December 19, 2009
Hot tubs and home spa systems are becoming increasingly popular and also common in many homes. They are no longer reserved for the luxurious lifestyle but are affordable and come in a great spectrum of models and styles to suit all interests and use orientations. In is more common than ever before to find a hot tub already installed in a home that you are about to purchase and they are also one of the more popular backyard renovation purchases associated with today’s market. Hot tubs spas have also expanded in functioning interests and are now frequently associated with a healthy lifestyle. This has not detracted from their entertainment context but rather has increased the amount of use a home hot tub receives as well as the reasons for their purchase.
Their association to health takes on various structures and often includes other backyard elements such as an exercise area complete with the necessary equipment and a yoga or tai chi deck or space clearing. It is extremely popular hot tub owners with a focus on its health benefits to have a nice yard area cleared or a slightly raised platform to perform their morning and evening health rituals. When a yoga or tai chi session is followed by a relaxing dip in a hot tub the calming effects can be compounded. And in today’s hectic and often times stressful environment all the calming and relaxing life elements we can incorporate the better off we are. Exercise, and in particular cardio vascular activities that incorporate aerobic factors are recognized as one of the essential elements in any healthy lifestyle. And in addition stress is recognized as one of the most health deteriorating elements affecting today’s society. With this in mind it makes perfect sense that every resource for stress reduction a person can access should be taken advantage of and hot tubs and home spas are always at the top of the list.
Singapore Power Station
Posted in: Food,Travel by George on December 15, 2009
With a broad range of cultural influences finding places of intersection in Singapore, it’s one of the most exciting places in the world to visit these days. It’s a very unique place, a city state with a long history as a major world port, and it always seems to be just a little bit ahead of the rest of the world. It’s a spectacular place to see new fashions, new art, and the latest trends in design and technology, and it’s also a splendid place to escape from the repetitions of everyday life. Guests here are constantly surprised at how much there is to see and do here, and there’s certainly something for everyone.
In culinary terms, it’s one of the most delicious places on earth, with the wide variety of foods available due to the rich combination of Malay, Indian, and Chinese cultures. There are also some fantastic Italian restaurants in the city, owing to the ready and constant supply of fresh seafood and other ingredients to make for a perfect meal. There are other Italian influences here, too, as evidenced by the wonderful and intriguing projects sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute in Singapore. In 2008, they sponsored a magnificent public art project, Power Station.
This was initiated by the very prolific Stefano Cagol, an artist based in Trento, and currently doing a residency in New York City. As part of the Singapore Biennale, Power Station was a multi-layered project that took place all over the city. A van would park, playing national anthems of different nations, with the intention of investigating the phenomenon of power in the world today. Spectators were invited to interact, and to reflect on their own notions of power, while considering the many levels of power that translate in the realm of nationhood. The artist asked fascinating questions about some of the most pressing issues of the day, and continues to ask important questions as his work continues to move forward.
Welcome to Miami
Posted in: Dining,Travel by George on December 7, 2009
It’s time to check into one of the hotels Miami has to offer and then hit the town. This is a multicultural melting pot to the tenth power. And you can see it all at South Beach. South Beach is the vacation spot for even the locals of Florida. Maybe that is a tip for the rest of the US tourists or other world travelers to take from the state of Florida. Looks like South Beach is a must see. Of course most of Florida is like different degrees of summer all the time, so you really can come for a visit just about any time.
Most people come to Florida to get away from the cold winters they endure where ever they come from. However, if you can make it to South Beach Florida between May and August then you will avoid the big tourist crowds. This is a great time to get the good rates on hospitality and a sure in to any restaurant in town. The worst time to go for most travelers looking for some down time is between March and April. This is when the colleges from all over take there Spring Break and the students pack onto the beaches and streets of this crazy town.
While you visit South Beach in Miami, the beach is not the only main attraction. You can head over to Lincoln Road and watch the people go by. Much of this street is closed for vehicle traffic so it is all happening on foot. There are so many shops, galleries and museums to wander through. Visitors can also find a fantastic restaurant with out door seating to enjoy the unique crown of people going by. You never know what you will see. Once again, the restaurant cuisines reflect the cultural influences of the many immigrants who have created this city. You can find Italian, Cuban and New World restaurants.
Cheroot by the fire
Posted in: Home by George on December 7, 2009
Well these days home owners may get a vent free gas fireplace in stalled but they may need a vent for their Cigar or Cheroot. Now that there is a great fireplace in the house, the guys are gonna want to come over with their cigars and cheroots and play cards all night. Now that brings up a question. What is the difference between cigars and cheroots? The cigar is a tightly rolled bunch of tobacco that has a pointed end which is were one smokes from. In case you needed reminding. Don’t cut the pointed end to much. I always see guys gnawing on it. Ewe.
The cheroot is a bit different. It is a smoke-able roll yes but not a cigar. For one thing it has a only one side that is lit leaving the other side with a filter for smoking. The filter is usually made of a small rolled piece of corn husks. The outside of the cheroot is made of dried carbia myxa leaf also known as thanal-phet. The inside is a secret blend of tobacco and dried wood. That is of course what makes the difference between the brands and styles of different makers. They come in many sizes. The smallest size is just a bit larger than a cigarette. The big ones get to be about six to eight inches long with about a half inch in diameter.
This is a good thing for the ladies that may show up to the poker party. This used to be the thing with grandma’s generation. The women of the past days would make up their own hand rolled cheroots. They would be made up of the wood and tobacco as well as some leaves and cotton thread probably from the family sewing basket. They even had a tobacco basket to store all the ingredients and tools. Remember the cheroots that were so glamorous? The ones that were at the end of a long ivory holders. All the ladies like to look chic with their smokes and their tight satin dresses.
Dubai is a Place of Extremes
Posted in: Travel by George on December 1, 2009
My overall impressions of Dubai after spending 10 days here was that it’s a lot bigger and more spread out than I expected. I thing I was expecting a city congregated around a central hub, but it’s actually more sprawling than that. It has designated areas for international business and media. The old town of Dubai sits on both sides of a creek and the larger hotels spread out from there down the coast. Like the one of many four star hotels Dubai offers where I’m staying. The amount of construction, even though it’s almost come to a dead stop, is immense. I couldn’t go 10 yards without seeing a road of building under construction.
Anyways, a lot of my time was spent relaxing by the pool, then being taken around various sights, like the Burj Dubai, which when it gets finished will be the tallest building in the world. The structure is massive, very cool looking too. I also got good mileage out of using ‘The Entertainer’, which is a book that cost me $100 and gave me several hundred dollars worth of discount vouchers. I think I save over $200!
I went on a few excursions including a Desert Safari where I got driven around the desert dunes in a 4×4 jeep. I was screaming through most of it, it was way too fun. Then I was taken to a campsite where I had dinner while watching belly dancers dance all around me, and I got to ride a camel. Another highlight was visiting the old town, which I did twice. First time was on the open top bus tour, which was somewhat disappointing, only because it took forever to get to the old town! 3 hours! The second time I went down, I took the metro that just opened recently. I walked around the old souks and visited the Dubai museum, which is in an old fort built in 1787. It houses the whole history of Dubai.
The weirdest thing about my whole trip was going to the ski slope in the Mall of the Emirates. It was freezing in there! It was so bizarre to walk in from scorching 40 degree heat into the minutes! But, I’m finally figuring out Dubai, it is a place of extremes.
Just 15 Minutes in a Hot Tub and You Will Feel Rejuvenated
Posted in: Health by George on December 1, 2009
There are many different ways people are discovering to manage their stress, which will in turn alleviate anxiety, depression, and worries. No longer will you feel nervousness and discomfort and your overall health will improve, no matter which way you go about taking care of the relief of stress. Many people today live incredible hectic lifestyles, working late and not really spend enough time on themselves. They make out schedules for meetings, for soccer games, and plan out their weeks in their daily planner, but what some people seem to miss is the scheduling of just fifteen minutes a day, to sit, and to relax. This is one of the most important appointments that you should keep each and every day. Create a quiet spot that is just your spot, one without noise and outside distractions. Some people choose inside the house, some prefer a quiet spot in the park, while others choose their own back yard.
By focusing on your breathing and quieting your mind you fell the daily pressures disappear. One of the ways that I have found enhances and deepens this experience, is by also soaking in my hot tub. The water melts away the tension from my back, my neck muscles, and my entire body. The bubbling of the jets, is a soothing sound to me personally and I can find myself without on distracting thought. Just a few months ago, we had ordered the hot tub through choosehottubsdirect.com, and although I had always loved taking warm baths, and had spent a bit of time sitting in spas, I had not felt the cumulative effects of one soak everyday, rain or shine. It is my time away, for just a bit each night, and my stress levels have dropped tremendously. This is something I highly recommend for anyone today, living a hectic lifestyle and feeling the effects of that lifestyle, just a 15 minute soak, and all is well, balance is restored.
Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra

Mark was about to visit the great state of Texas for the first time in his life. He had recently graduated from law school and wanted to become a state prosecutor. Texas was big and he liked that. And he had indulged in a fantasy to live there from the time he was a child. In addition, his fiancée Tracey grew up in Fort Worth and was interested in moving back. So, Mark was going to visit his soon to be in-laws, interview with a law firm, and look at possible houses to buy, all in one week. And he thought law school itself was stressful. The one thing he felt he had going for him was that he had already met most of Tracey’s family, including her parents and he really liked them and felt like he got along well with everyone.
Still, he felt more comfortable staying in one of the Fort Worth luxury hotels while Tracey would stay at her parent’s house. They were adults and were going to be getting married soon, but still they believed that everyone would be more comfortable if Tracey stayed at her parents instead of the hotel with Mark. And Mark definitely wanted to stay in a hotel because it would be easier for him to prepare for his job interview.
Just as Mark expected it to be, Texas was big. It felt like he had flown across most of the country simply between the time the pilot announced they had entered Texas and when they landed at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. He felt immediately at home, however, and somewhat oddly and had a great time with Tracey’s family. Her parents took the couple to a performance by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra where they were lucky enough to hear an evening of piano works by Schumann and Chopin. The pianist that evening was Horacio Gutierrez.
National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration in Lubbock
Posted in: Travel by George on December 1, 2009
David was going to go to Lubbock, Texas with his wife Daisy while she was on a business trip. She frequently traveled for her work and David usually enjoyed going with her. He had never been to Lubbock before and was interested in exploring the city. Before they had settled into their room in one of the hotels Lubbock, David already had a ton of information on the city’s attractions, landmarks and social elements that were associated with the arts and performance scene. He also found out that Lubbock was the birth place of both Mac Davis and Buddy Holly.
One of interesting things David read about was the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration. David was not really a cowboy himself, well, not at all actually, though he loved this component of American History and was definitely interested in western stories and the mythological basis behind much of this country’s development. And so he decided to go to the celebration when Daisy was going to be tied up in meetings all day. This was not because he didn’t want her to come along but knew she wouldn’t be interested. He would save going to the theatre or opera when she was free and enjoy the cowboys on his own.
The symposium was actually quite fascinating and was as educational, or rather informative as David called it, as it was entertaining and fun. He noticed the free horse and carriage rides and was tempted to take one but felt it would be imposing. He spent a long time looking at the cowboy hats and boots and was terribly tempted to buy some. However, he finally settled on buying Daisy a beautiful turquoise necklace and earring set. There was great music the entire time he was there and he meant to check the schedule for the rest of the weekend, but forgot. Later he told Daisy about his day and she loved her jewelry. She was so interested in his stories that they decided to go again the following day. That time they road in one of the horse drawn carriages.
